Just one band for you today.
AWOLNATION is one of those bands where I’m not sure if the frontman — Aaron Bruno — is “the band”, or if the rest of the members deserve equal credit. I think Bruno writes all the songs, so I’m going to just say that it’s Aaron Bruno’s band.
Here are my selects from all of their (his?) albums.
Megalithic Symphony
Debut album best album. A tale as old as time.
Sail
You’ve certainly heard this song. It took over the world, for a small time.
I don’t even like this one very much.
I have a second-hand memory of my long-time good friend Seth, in the first month of his very short college career, screaming out “I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG” into the hallway as someone played it in their dorm.
Wasn’t present for that. He just told me about it. Silly boy.
Kill Your Heroes
I do like this song, but that’s not why I’m sharing it with you.
This song transports me to a younger and decidedly stupider past version of myself.
I was pining over a girl in my dance class — as I was wont to do — and, for some reason, would think about her whenever I played this song. I’d just sit there, in my room, listening to this song on repeat, thinking about how much I liked this girl.
Euch.
Also, pining over a girl is the exact opposite of killing your heroes.
All I Need
This song describes an unhealthy attachment style / emotional dependence on another person. I also just like it.
I did not pine over a girl to this song. You can’t pin me down.
Knights of Shame
You’re probably going to hate this song.
Run
This album takes a bit of a turn. Less “BREEEOOOOWWWW” and more “screeeeee”, if that makes sense (it shouldn’t).
Run
He said it! He said the name of the album!
I like this song because it acknowledges the human condition, or something.
Little bit edgelord in the latter half but ya gotta take ‘em as they come.
Like People, Like Plastic
It’s a song!
I Am
This song is basically my philosophy in terms of my upbringing. I like who I am, so I wouldn’t dare change a thing.
It was at the age of 19, laying on the carpeted floor of my apartment next to my fiancée, listening to this song, that I had a realization: everything is just… fractals.
The acid may have contributed a bit.
Lie Love Live Love
I am sharing this song because Erin thought it contained a racial slur, and I think that’s fucking hilarious.
Here Come the Runts
This album is where I start to drop off. I’m a big first-and-second-album kinda guy. Still, I’ll add a few songs. Hate them? Okay!
Passion
I feel like this song is maybe a critique of hustle culture, which I align with.
Handyman
This song is too clever by half with its rhymes, I think. I like it otherwise.
Weird Shit
Not the name of an album they have released. I’m doing some ~editorializing~ over here.
I’m On Fire
What the fuck is this song? This shit is so creepy. I know it’s a cover of a song by Bruce Springsteen, but I don’t think that shields it from criticism.
Knights of Shame is easily my favorite song of theirs. It's so good, you would have heard from me if it didn't make the list if for no other reason than its uniqueness. I also have no idea who the other people on vocals are, and I've looked. Another funny one (also on Megalithic Symphony) is Some Sort of Creature. It's great because it's so genuine, I think it's an encapsulation of the human experience in its own way.
