Wednesday Music Shlop: The Killers | Weezer
I share two rock bands with you today, both of which you are certainly quite familiar with. I never promised to post music you haven’t heard. You’re getting some hits today and you’re going to like it.
To start, I give you the new leader of my playlist. Certainly the smartest band. My favorite band. And the, uh, sexiest creators I have ever laid eyes on. The lovely foursome The Killers!
The Killers
The Killers are not actually my favorite band, but they come close. The thing, you see, with The Killers is that they already made all of their best music, and now they just seem to exist. This would make me sad, but for the bountiful treasures they’ve already given the world.
As I wrote the above paragraph, I was forced to reckon with the name “The Killers” anew for the first time in a long time. It’s a silly name. The raw words of the thing are so very different from what the name is to me. Before, if you said “The Killers”, my mind would process it in a way very different from how it processes simple phrases — almost replacing it entirely with an abstract idea of good band that you like.
Strange.
Spaceman
First song best song. The lyrics haunt, if you pay attention to what they mean1.
Just such a good fucking song, though. Only song I’ve ever sung for karaoke. I’ve done karaoke once, to be clear.
Change Your Mind
This song (and album) will be 20 years old in just 8 days. You’ve certainly heard Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me, or All These Things That I’ve Done from the same album, which contains nothing but hits.
The lyrics spoke to me as a heartbroken young man; not so anymore. Still, it’s raw beauty distilled into song.
When You Were Young
One of the songs I would play over and over (and over and over) on Guitar Hero2, much to the annoyance of my siblings.
Read My Mind
We now enter the “Hickcore” era of the band — a term I just coined and immediately hate.
Nothing wrong with hickcore.
Be Still
This song means a lot to me, for reasons that — in breaking with tradition — I will not share.
Shadowplay
I only just learned, while writing this post, that this song is actually a cover of a song by the same name by Joy Division.
I prefer this version.
Weezer
I’m not a huge Weezer stan. I like some of their music, and I thought it would pair well with The Killers today.
My Name Is Jonas
So proud was I to master this song on Guitar Hero.
Fucking hammer-ons, man.
Island In The Sun
So proud was I to barely play this song on guitar.
Fucking real instruments, man.
Pork And Beans
Much can be said about a man who writes, composes, records, and releases an entire song that amounts to “I’m not mad!!! I’m not mad!!! Ur mad!” but for some reason, I trust them.
Thank God for Girls
I like the obsession with cannoli, and also, I like the song.
I’m putting the Spotify playlist at the bottom so that you might read the things I put effort into writing.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ — like I do — to understand pop rock lyrics…
Alongside Miss Murder and My Name Is Jonas (both by different bands)
